Analysis for Human Performance Technology Decisions

Term:

Spring 2004

Instructor:

Phil Doughty

Course Description:

Addresses analytical techniques used to determine educational or training program solution. Participants examine human behavior and the role that instruction can have in changing behavior on the job and in society.

Learning Objectives:

Course Goals:

  1. Define and distinguish between the concepts of Front-End Analysis, Needs Assessment, Instructional Analysis, Performance Analysis and Performance Engineering.
  2. Describe the rationale for and historical development of the Performance Technology movement/profession, and the role of Front-End Analysis in this context.
  3. Perform analyses of human performance problems in both organizational and societal settings.
  4. Perform analyses of future education, training and development needs brought about by systemic change, new technologies, organization development, etc.
  5. Select techniques and plan procedures for conducting a systematic Front-End Analysis project.
  6. Perform job, task, content and target population analyses in a variety of educational and training contexts, using a variety of appropriate analysis techniques and instruments.
  7. Perform cost, efficiency and effectiveness estimates of education, training and other related solutions.
  8. Plan an integrated approach to Front-End Analysis for a given organization or context.
  9. Select, adapt or design appropriate instrumentation for data collection for FEA.
  10. Identify and apply appropriate interpersonal procedures and skills in the process of FEA data collection.
  11. Prepare FEA project-planning documentation appropriate for the project's clients, stakeholders and project team members.
  12. Adapt or modify basic Front-End Analysis procedures and techniques to formal education contexts, where performance concepts and indicators are more difficult to apply, define, measure, and follow-up.

Dissemination Strategy :

Face-to-face class.

Course Reflection:

This course taught me that a good front-end can set the stage for an entire project. A good front-end analysis (FEA) can also provide a basis for an effective evaluation. So many people eiter don't know how to perform a good FEA or they dont see the value in it. A good FEA can be essential to a well run project and can enables well-thought out, well-informed decisions.
